It’s a rule of thumb that you should see your gynecologist annually. Sometimes, though, you may feel like you need to see them sooner than once a year. It could be because something seems to be off, or you may just have had a new health scare that has brought these thoughts to the forefront of your mind.

Here are three signs that it’s time for you to see your gynecologist:

1. Irregular period

Heavy periods, or menstruation that lasts for more than seven days, is the most common sign of abnormality.

If you think your periods are getting heavier, take a look at the thickness of your sanitary products after a few hours. If they’re soaked through, or if you’ve changed them more than once in two hours, it’s time to check with your doctor.

As well as being heavy, irregular periods can also be painful. If your periods are very painful and interfere with your daily life, this could be a sign of endometriosis, a condition where cells like those in the lining of the womb grow elsewhere in the body.

Other symptoms of endometriosis include pain during or after sex, pain when going to the toilet during your period, and feeling sick or constipated during menstruation.

2. Lower abdominal pain

Sharp, stabbing pain in your lower abdomen could be a sign of several underlying issues. Some of the common causes of pelvic pain are:

Endometriosis: The uterine lining is called the endometrium. If any tissue from this lining grows outside the uterus, it causes pain and inflammation. These growths can even cause scar tissue to form.

Fibroid tumors: Non-cancerous tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus can cause pelvic pain.

Ovarian cysts: These are fluid-filled sacs that can grow on the ovaries. They often go away on their own, but if they don’t or they get big enough, they may rupture and cause bleeding or pain.

Ectopic pregnancy: This is when a fertilized egg implants somewhere outside the uterus, like in one of the fallopian tubes. If not detected early, it can result in a serious loss of blood and require emergency surgery.

In addition to being able to pinpoint the cause of your pain, a gynecologist can help determine whether it’s something that needs to be treated now, or if it will eventually go away on its own. So, if you’re experiencing pain in the lower abdominal region, you should immediately see your gynecologist.

3. Breast pain or other issues

If you have any concerns about your breasts, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. This is especially true if you notice changes that are out of the ordinary for you.

Breast pain or discomfort can mean various things, including serious forms of diseases. Some women have fibrocystic breasts that tend to be lumpy and painful prior to their menstrual periods. Other women have cyclical breast pain that is not related to their monthly cycles.

In most cases, breast pain is not caused by cancer. However, if you find a lump in your breast or experience severe pain, it’s important to report it to your gynecologist for further investigation.

Final words

It is important to stay on top of your overall health and to remember that your gynecologist can help with reproductive health problems that you may be experiencing. If you are experiencing the mentioned signs, or any other form of problems, see your gynecologist right away. Book your appointment!
